Why this booklet matters
I originally prepared this booklet for my colleagues in the Leadership Northland Class of 2023 (Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce) when they asked me to recommend healthcare resources. Two books immediately came to mind, and both continue to shape how I think about dignity, compassion, and healing.
Dignity for Deeply Forgetful People reminds us that a person living with dementia remains a conscious human being who can still think, feel, and desire. It equips families and professionals to accept, affirm, and connect with the people in their care. The Body Keeps the Score reveals how deeply trauma imprints the brain, mind, and body, and it surveys the expanding range of treatments that offer real hope for recovery.
Whether you care for patients, support grieving families, lead a team, or simply want to understand the people you serve more fully, these two books are well worth your time.
The two books it recommends
- Dignity for Deeply Forgetful People: How Caregivers Can Meet the Challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease, by Stephen G. Post
- The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma, by Bessel van der Kolk
